Just sketching out some data points for comparison:Low end calcs: (Firepower)Turbolasers are interpreted as being similar to phasers: natural objects that are struck by blasters and turbolasers such as asteroids and the ground disintegrate, sometimes with an impressive flash, sometimes not but regardless no direct correlation can be made between how the weapons will effect an artificial target such as a shielded starship made of exotic materials nor any specific energy values derived. 'Sub-kiloton' energy values are the presumption since there are no nuclear flashes or shockwaves in an atmosphere.Phasers act as gigajoule particle beams when striking shields, may disintegrate volumes equivalent to the effects of hundreds of thousands of terrawatts when effecting natural objects like planetary crusts or unadapted Borg cubes. Photon torpedoes are sub-kiloton in close combat situations as depicted in the TMP era movies.
Phasers are significantly less effective against targets equipped with dense or exotic armors.Low end calcs (durability)Starfighters with weapons that effect their targets similar to a cannon round from a jet fighter can damage capital starships if they attack specific vulnerable spots. AT-TEs can do so as well if the shields are down. Starfighters may be able to maneuver through capital ship shields at high risk in order to conduct surgical strikes.
The loss of the bridge can cause momentary crippling of capital ships and unpredictable secondary consequences like spontaneous engine firing in the direction of the nearest Death Star.Single digit kiloton nuclear weapons are a legitimate threat to the TOS Enterprise, a D-7 without any sort of modernization, a peer of the TOS Enterprise, is still capable of damaging the shields of an Intrepid-class starship in double digit percentages. Thus kiloton firepower is still a legitimate threat to the Sovereign-class if less so than the smaller Intrepid-class.Low end calcs (acceleration / speed)Both sides prefer to engage in combat at speeds of tens of kilometers per second or lower and ranges lower than a few dozen kilometers where possible. Neither is able to spontaneously accelerate at thousands of gees or tactically use their FTL drive to evade enemy fire.No starship with the possible exception of a Klingon D-7 in TOS (I say possible because there are alternative explanations) has been known to 'warp strafe' - that is to say, attack a stationary or sublight target while moving at faster than light speeds. Especially in situations where it would be highly beneficial to do so such as attacking the Dominion's static defenses at the Chin'toka and Cardassia systems.Low calcs (Auxiliary craft)Republic starfighters can carry anti-starship weapons and under the right circumstances, can inflict meaningful damage against unarmored targets on a ship's hull. Click to expand.Just skimming Wookiepeedia, it seems that compacting the firepower of an ISD into a hull 65% shorter (and if its anything like the Venator, perhaps as much as 2 or 3 times smaller in overall volume) strained Republic shipbuilding capabilities. The ISD by contrast seems to be a more straightforward build because while it doesn't use its bulk as efficiently, its probably easier to work on and may rely more on 'off the shelf' parts. All the 'fat' on the ISD probably makes her a bit more survivable in combat too.
It would suck to be a Stormtrooper walking back to your barracks after being at your battlestation during a slug out only to find a radioactive hole open to space where the AT-AT garage was but that shot could have hit something critical instead on a ship with less 'non-essentials' like the concussion warhead magazines. Click to expand. This is from the episode Elaan of Troyius. This was a major point of contention on another thread recently.
I watched and rewatched the episode and the relevant scenes many times. You are correct in that alternative explanations are possible. However, at one point near the end of the episode, the flow and timing of the scene strongly implies that 1 of 2 things happens.

Either the D7 at FTL fires on and strikes the Enterprise at STL, or the Enterprise at FTL fires on and strikes the D7 at STL. The D7 came in and fired, striking the Enterprise, then Kirk ordered warp speed and then ordered firing upon the Klingons. So either the Klingons were at warp and warp strafed, or the Klingons were STL and the Enterprise warp strafed. The only alternative, which seems unlikely based upon how the scene flowed, is that Kirk had magical timing and kicked in warp speed just as the Klingons did.
However, this was not mentioned and didn't really fit the scene. My point is that it is just as possible, based on the episode, that the Enterprise has warp strafing as it is that the D7 does.Edit: fixed typo. As regarding the whole warp strafing thing, which is oft theorized but rarely if ever seen. If Chekov can time a jump to warp to avoid a BoP's torpedo in ST V and the Enterprise D can conduct a transporter beam-in at near warp speed (Let's call it warp-transporter-strafing) there is no reason any ship can't. Especially given the ST FTL magic sensor tech. MY theory is that in the ST verse, the same sophisticated sensors make it a moot point; it would be like the Ori jumping the Daedelus in Unending. The second you drop out of warp, you are under fire. Granted you can RETURN fire as well.
The same would hold true for a vessel AT warp. Just as an arrow can hit a bird, so too can a phaser or photon torpedo (in theory) hit a vessel at warp, if they give enough deflection on the shot. Again the magic FTL sensors make it possible to track an incoming vessel at warp and shoot at it from impulse, or vice versa. Not a huge advantage.Assuming this is true, the SW ships with STL sensors will be at a severe disadvantage in this application; but, as noted, because it was once (if ever) employed offensively, we have to go on ST canon and say that it's a 'maybe'.I think all could agree though that pretty much ANY starfleet ship if it DID engage in warp strafing could take down pretty much any SW ships that lacked the shields to tank the entire onboard arsenal of torpedoes and such that any Fed ship might carry. In any case, in a straight up STL battle, my money is (barely) on the Sovreign class. Better gunnery, better maneuverability. Staying a light second or so out from the SD with a drunken Ivan course programmed to avoid the SW weapons while spamming them with photon torpedoes and quantum torpedoes should prove a good strategy.
But really it's a battle of sensors and gunnery, which ST has in the bag.Much like a PT boat taking on a cruiser that somehow only has it's main guns (no point defense mgs or cannon). Should be able to weave its way in and fire a salvo of torpedoes no issue.
Maxwank, huh?Let's see how powerful we can make the good old ISD. Dodonna quote says the Death Star has more firepower than half the starfleet combined. Pellaeon quote says the Empire had 25,000 star destroyers. Death Star yield is around 1e38j, divided by 12, 500, gives an ISD almost 2 yottatons for a full broadside.Hmm. Not wanky enough. How many Imperial ships did we even see in ANH?
Nebula Class Star Destroyer Model Kits For Sale
I recall 4 ISDs. Legends is non-canon now, so let's assume that was the entire Imperial fleet (all the ships in the later movies could have been built later). So each broadside would equal somewhere around 11-12,000 yottatons.Pfft. We need to go wankier.Going back to Legends (because why not?) I recall that the 'Behind the Magic' CD stated that Dodonna's quote referred to not the Imperial starfleet, but the Alliance starfleet. Conveniently ignoring all other EU sources again, the entirety of the Alliance starfleet seen in ANH consisted of roughly 30 fighters. Jumping back to the EU again, an ISD carries 72 fighters of its own, and many books say that fighters are no threat to capital ships except in huge numbers, like thousands. So let's say it takes 1000 fighters to match the firepower of an ISD, and 15 fighters have more power than the Death Star.
So an ISD broadside has at least 6.66666666e39 joules. We've made an ISD more powerful than the Death Star, but that's still not enough.Let's forget Alderaan for a second, I remember a source saying that the Death Star had enough firepower to destroy 'any inhabited planet'. As no other qualifications were given for this statement, we can assume it refers to any inhabited planet in the setting. Stretching what counts as 'the setting', Marvel published many Star Wars comics, and everything they've ever published technically exists somewhere in their omniverse.
An old Fantastic Four comic featured an inhabited planet that 'dwarfed galaxies'. Let's go high-end and assume that planet was 10 times as big as the biggest galaxy. The largest galaxy discovered, IC1101, has a diameter of 6 million light years. So the Death Star can one-shot a planet 60 million light-years in diameter, and, as per our previous calculations, a full broadside from an ISD is 6 times that.We now have ISDs dishing out and taking yields many orders of magnitude greater than the total mass-energy content of the visible universe. But we can wank even farther! In ESB, we see the galaxy from a distance and it's visibly rotating in the span of a few seconds, meaning it is moving much faster than light. As it takes infinite energy to accelerate to the speed of light due to relativity, everything in the SW galaxy must have beyond infinite energy and durability.
An ISD can casually vaporize and survive collisions with objects that have beyond infinite KE, making an ISD's shielding and firepower at least 2 steps above infinite (Aleph 2).Hmm, now we're getting somewhere. But let's keep going.Wookieepedia says:So the Force is omnipotent. That means that, by definition, it's also infinite, and any infinite quantity divided by a finite number is just as infinite. As there are a finite amount of Force users, it stands to reason that every individual Force user is also omnipotent. Many Jedi have been killed by blaster bolts (order 66, etc.), therefore a single infantry blaster fires a bolt with beyond omnipotent power, capable of slaying an omnipotent, omniscient, all-powerful being capable of anything even if it's logically impossible.
An ISD has a ridiculously greater amount of firepower than a blaster, therefore the power of an ISD is many orders of magnitude/infinity beyond a weapon which is more powerful than omnipotence. That should do it. Click to expand.Alright, I'll give it a shot. We've already established that the original Enterprise can survive 10 trillion supernovas, but that is an older model starship, and thus not up to date, especially with the refits and upgrades that became common during the Dominion War.In TNG 'Hide and Q', Riker becomes a member of the Q Continuum. We know from Q's comments, that Q is omnipotent, with infinite power. In TNG 'A Matter of Honor', Riker is the first officer on a Klingon ship. On a Klingon ship, the hierarchy of command is that the strongest and most fit Klingon leads.
Since Riker is subordinate to Captain Kargan, logically, Captain Kargan must also be infinite in power, but to an even greater degree, since Riker was a member of Q, and therefore had infinite power of his own. Furthermore, since Captain Kargan with his infinite power did not fly around on his own, using instead a Klingon Bird of Prey, we can safely assume that a Bird of Prey is many times more infinitely powerful than Captain Kargan. Despite this, the Pagh is unable to defeat the Enterprise, which is easily victorious, clearly has an even more infinitely powerful infinite power. Now, all of this would only be speculation without evidence to back it up, but thanks to IDW publishing, we have that evidence. The USS Enterprise, with its infinitely greater infinite power than a Bird of Prey is attacked by Cybermen from Doctor Who. We all know that the Doctor has access to Time Lord technology, which, according to the sources on this forum, provides perfect mastery over time and space for all realities that ever were or ever could be and rewrite the rules of those realities on a whim. The Cybermen have on more than one occasion defeated the Doctor, so logically, their infinite power must be even greater than his. Since the Enterprise was ultimatly able to defeat the Cybermen, it's infinite power must also transcend the entire multiverse with complete control of all time and space, all realities that are, were, or ever could be, and the physics of how they work.

Now, as an addendum to the previous post, we know that while the Enterprise D is a formidable ship, it isn't the best one in Trek. Since the Enterprise has been established to be infinitely powerful to such a degree that it has transcendent power over the entire multiverse, it stands to reason that its sister ships are just as good. In the final episode of season 2 of Deep Space Nine, we see the USS Odyssey, a Galaxy Class Starship like the Enterprise D taken down by three Jem Hadar fighters, and since that is the case, the combined power of three Jem Hadar attack fighters must be greater than that provided by infinite power and perfect mastery over time and space across the entire multiverse. This is relevant because later on in Deep Space Nine, we bear witness the the Glory and the Grace that is Sisko's Motherfucking Pimphand, aka: the USS Defiant.
The USS Defiant has been able, on more than one occasion to fight and defeat 3 Jem Hadar Attack Fighters. Since the Jem Hadar Attack Fighters were able to defeat a Galaxy Class Starship that we have already established to have complete mastery over time and space with multiversal infinite power, and since the Defiant could win where a Galaxy could not, it's own infinite power must be greater still. However, even the Defiant is not invincible. In the Battle of Sector 001, it is crippled effortlessly by a Borg Cube, all while the cube is facing and defeating other ships of the line from Starfleet. Therefore, however amazingly infinitely powerful the infinite power of multiversal mastery of time and space the Defiant has, that of the Borg is even greater.
Unfortunately for them, not even the Borg were ready for the One True God of Star Trek: The USS Enterprise E. The Federation had learned much from the Dominion War, the Cybermen Encounter, and the previous battles with the Borg. With the complete multiversal mastery over time, space, and the laws of physics, they clearly must have rewritten all of reality as it was, is, or ever shall be, merely to serve as a staging ground for the birth of the One True God. When the Enterprise E sailed forth into battle, not even the highest infinite power across infinite multiverses, that of a Borg Cube, was able to match them. Therefore, the Nebula Class Star Destroyer, even with its infinitly powerful infinite power, cannot match the infinitely multiversal infinite power of a Sovereign Class Starship.
